The festive season is just around the corner and it’s the perfect time to capture merry memories which you’ll enjoy reminiscing about for years to come. Whether you’re dreaming of photographing a Christmas fashion-themed editorial or seasonal family portraits, these tips for capturing and editing Christmas inspired photo shoots are sure to help you out!

Embrace Bokeh:

Christmas is truly the best time of year for incorporating Bokeh into your photographs, as both fairy lights and snow can produce some stunning light effects on camera. This dappled lighting also seems to instantly give your images that festive look, so you won’t be disappointed! To achieve bokeh naturally using a DSLR camera, try the following: Set your camera to A or Av mode (Aperture Priority Mode) and select the smallest possible aperture (f) number for your lens. Next, change your camera to manual focus and zoom your lens in to around the 50mm mark.

Photo editing tip: Don’t own a DSLR or simply finding it too hard to achieve natural Bokeh in your images? In the BeFunky Photo Editor, there are heaps of Bokeh textures to choose from which will instantly give you your desired effect. In the Editor, simply go to the Overlays menu before selecting Bokeh.

Let It Snow:

Whether you live in the northern or southern hemisphere, Christmas will always contain that snowy magic – from ice crystal decorations to artificial snow frosted trees. For those of you who are able to get out in actual snow, try to take advantage of this wintery setting for your Christmas inspired photo shoots!

Photo Editing Tip: If you’re like me, however, and find that your festive season takes place in Summer (with no snow in sight…ever!), then you can easily fake this snowy landscape look by using the Photo Editor. Go to the Effects menu, before scrolling right to the end to find the Winter category. The first option will give you a beautiful, snowy landscape effect, while the second option will make your image appear as though there is snow falling in it!

Experiment With Color Schemes:

When we think of Christmas, we often think of an abundance of red, white, green, silver and gold. Don’t be afraid to mix up your color scheme when producing Christmas inspired images – it will give them a unique and interesting edge! Think pastels mixed with metallic shades, or even a stunning palette of blue and silver. As long as there are festive elements in your images, such as ornaments, presents, pine trees etc, then it will still embrace that concept.

Photo Editing Tip: You can also change the colors of your image in the Photo Editor by applying different tinted effects. Selections such as Vintage Colors and Chromatic are my two favourite options for this.

Get The Pets Involved:

Christmas isn’t just for humans, so try and get your furry friends in on the festive photo shoot action too! You’ll thank yourself for creating treasured photographic memories, and the results could give you a nice pet portrait to display in your home (or use on Christmas cards!). While Xmas inspired pet outfits are optional, a festive backdrop will always do the trick. Play around with angles, focus and distance to see what looks best.

Photo Editing Tip: If you don’t own a camera with DSLR capabilities, then you can still add in these professional looking effects using the BeFunky Photo Editor. In the Edit menu, tools such as Smoothing, Blur and Soften Edges will give your image that desired softer look. Funky Focus (with reduced opacity) is also a great tool which mimics the selective focus option on a DSLR camera.

Don’t Forget To Have Fun!

The festive season is a wonderful time of year when we can usually kick back, relax and catch up with loved ones. When planning a Christmas inspired photo shoot, one of the most important things you can do is just to have fun with it – throw snow balls, blow confetti out of your hands, or have fun with sparklers. Sometimes your unplanned and playful photographs will be your most favorite.

Photo Editing Tip: In the Photo Editor, the Beautify tool is perfect for enhancing small pops of color. Textures such as Light Leaks or Light Trails will also add a lot more magic to your images – especially those containing sparklers as they are often difficult to fully capture on camera.
