Restore Old Photos in Seconds With BeFunky

By Isabelle | Photo Editor Tutorials

Some of our most cherished memories are woven into the fabric of old photographs – fragments of lives captured in sepia tones and faded hues. While these snapshots encapsulate long-gone moments and help us hold onto the past, the passage of time can leave them worn and weathered. Luckily, in this digital age, BeFunky's Old Photo Restorer can repair damage, clarify details, and restore color in just a few clicks. Let’s take a look at how easy it is to breathe life into new photos with this powerful AI tool.

Can Old Photographs Be Restored?

Yes! Old photographs can be restored online thanks to the growing power of digital technology. In the past, photo restoration was a painstaking manual process. These days, the Old Photo Restorer can revive old photographs in just seconds. This tool uses AI to recover lost details, restore vibrancy, repair damage, and more. The Old Photo Restorer’s fine-tuned algorithms bridge the gap between the past and the present, renewing the beauty of old photographs and keeping memories alive in the process.

Old Photo Restorer Legacy vs. GFX+

There are two versions of the Old Photo Restorer, each designed for different results.

The Legacy version gives you more manual control. You can adjust scratch reduction, toggle face recovery, and apply subtle recoloring. The result keeps a soft, vintage look that feels true to the original photo.

GFX+ is a more advanced, AI-driven option. It automatically restores faces, removes damage, and offers recoloring or black and white finishes. With Fidelity and Variation sliders, you can fine-tune how closely the result matches the original or explore multiple restored versions. Images restored with GFX+ tend to look sharper and more modern.

In general, use GFX+ for clearer photos with visible faces and details. Choose Legacy when you want to preserve a classic, aged aesthetic while cleaning up damage. If you are unsure, try both and compare the results.

How to Restore An Old Photo Online

To get started, make sure that you have captured a flat photograph of the image you want to restore, or scanned it at a high quality. If you’ve chosen to take a photo, you may want to straighten lines and correct angles with the Straighten and Perspective tools before continuing with the Old Photo Restorer.

Step 1: Upload Your Old Image

First, head over to the Photo Editor and upload your image. Alternatively, you can drag and drop a file into the canvas directly. You can find the Old Photo Restorer in the Edit tab under the Detail Enhancements section.

Step 2: Fine-Tune the Restoration

Once you click the Old Photo Restorer, the AI will automatically apply the GFX+ version of the tool to your image. You may decide to use the Legacy version to keep more of a vintage look. In this case, we’re sticking with GFX+.

Once applied, a Before and After slider lets you compare the restored image to the original. You can then refine the result with a few key options. Adjust Fidelity to control how closely the restoration matches the original, lower values allow more AI reconstruction, while higher values preserve existing details. You can also choose to recolor the photo or keep it black and white for a classic look. When you are satisfied, click Apply to save your changes.

Step 3: Save and Share Your Restored Photo

Finally, click on the Save button at the top of your canvas and export your photo to your desired location. Saving as a PNG is a great option for sharing digitally; a JPG or PDF works best if you are planning on printing your image to share with others.
