Go From Photo to Ink Wash With Artsy Effects

By Sarah Foster | Photo Editor Tutorials

Traditional ink wash art, originating in China during the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), marks a fascinating shift from realistic painting to capturing the essence of the subject. This technique, using black ink on paper or silk, was all about simplicity and expression, and it quickly became a favorite among the scholarly and aristocratic elite. Paintings were often done on rolled scrolls and admired in the homes of the wealthy, symbolizing both cultural and intellectual sophistication.

The Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) saw ink wash painting flourish as scholar-artists refined their techniques and introduced landscape painting. This art form spread to Japan and Korea, each culture adding its own unique twist. Even today, traditional ink wash art is cherished for its ability to convey deep emotions and natural beauty with minimal strokes.
