By Rach DePaoli | Basic Photo EditingPhoto Editor Tutorials

Halloween is the only time when you can fully immerse yourself in all things creepy and no one will call you out for it. The more moody your decorations, costumes, or personality, the better. Going all out is very much accepted and praised! You can choose to celebrate by dressing up in a crazy costume, throwing a Halloween party, and learning all the moves to “Thriller” - but you can really take it to the next level by getting a little creative with your photos.

If you’re itching to express your Halloween spirit with some frightful photo editing, we’ve got some ideas for you! Whether you use these photos to spook your friends on social media, as decor for your Halloween soirèe, or just for the fun of it, the effects and tools in BeFunky’s Photo Editor will help you create something awesome. Here are our favorite ways to use them for spooktacular results:

Create A Ghostly Photo

What if I told you I’ve captured a photo of a ghost - would you believe me?? Ok, ok. I may not have an photo of an actual ghost, but I can show you how easy it is to create the illusion of a ghostly appearance. It’s a great way to see what we will look like when we come back to haunt our loved ones.

how to make someone look like a ghost in photo

To get the look, find a photo of a person. This could be you, your kids, your partner, or any stranger you find on the millions of stock photos on Pixabay! When you’ve got the perfect photo, upload it into the Photo Editor and click on the Cutout tool in the Edit panel.

Select the paintbrush icon and make sure the Erase button is selected, then start erasing the portion of the photo around your subject (aka soon-to-be ghost). To get the cleanest edge, zoom in and make your brush smaller to hug each curve and get into every crevice. When you are finished, click the blue checkmark to confirm.

Pro Tip:

When you are zoomed in, easily move your image by holding down the Spacebar and dragging your subject with your mouse.

Next, head to the Effect tab and select a black and white effect to transform to your subject into a more ghostly rendition, then save the photo to your computer in PNG format. Saving as a PNG will guarantee that the background stays transparent instead of looking like a checkerboard.

Upload a new photo that will serve as the background of your ghostly scene, then click the Layer Manager at the top of the left menu. Upload the PNG file you just saved and add it to your background photo.

Layering photos with BeFunky Photo Editor

You can adjust the size of your layer and rotate it until it looks proportionate to the background photo. With the subject selected, decrease the Opacity and change the Blend Mode to Hard Light.

Add A Chilling Overlay

The great thing about overlays is that you can make any ordinary photo look like a complete work of art. You can use overlays to make cards, create a DIY label your Halloween treats, or to hang them up on your walls for some festive decor.

To get started, upload a spooky photo into BeFunky’s Photo Editor and select the Overlays tab. There, you’ll find an entire category dedicated to Halloween overlays!

When you find an overlay you’re dying to add to your photo, click on it and it will automatically appear on top of your photo.
