In the electronic world, glitches are frowned upon since they usually mean that your program or drive is in a corrupted state. But from a photo editing and design perspective, glitch effects can add different artistic elements to your images and give them heaps of dimension. These effects allow you to create unique photos that you can use for projects like posters and marketing material, or use them to create photos that stand out on social media.
If you are looking to spark some creativity by adding special effects to your photos, a great selection of glitch effects can be found in BeFunky’s Photo Editor. These glitch-inspired filters can give your images a sci-fi type of feel and can be customized and manipulated to create some really awesome scenes. In other worlds, they’ll take your photo from totally normal to otherworldly in just a single click! We’ll show you how.
Glitch Photography Inspiration
Adding glitch effects to photos is such a fun way to make them stand out. From Line Artopia to Holga Art, these glitchy filters are for anyone who wants to go the non-traditional route when it comes to photo editing. Each of the following effects can be found in the Effects tab of BeFunky’s Photo Editor, and here are some looks you can create with them:
The Holga Art effects in BeFunky’s Photo Editor mimic the look you’d get with a medium format 120 camera, giving your photo a low-fidelity aesthetic. They’re meant to look distorted and glitchy, and the best part is, you can totally control the amount of glitchiness you add to your photo with BeFunky.
Turn it way up for a multi-exposed look or turn it down for more minimal glitches. The look is completely up to you.
The Line Artopia effects do just what they sound like: add artistic lines to your image. The coolest part about these glitch effects is that you can control the width of the lines and the color scheme.
Create thick, bold lines for graphic emphasis or keep the lines small for a minimal look. Whatever route you go, this photo effect will have everyone wondering how you did it.
When it comes to glitch effects, Motion Color 1 and Motion Color 2 are your go-to’s in this category. They’re both great options for adding color blurs around the edges of your subject, almost like they’re in motion or being beamed up by a spaceship.
Create Your Own
If you’re feeling super creative and want to build a glitch effect from scratch, you can easily do that in BeFunky! Just upload your desired photo to the canvas and the same photo to the Image Manager. Then, add the photo from the Image Manager as a layer to the first photo and resize it to fit the bottom layer exactly. In other words, you’ll have the same two photos sandwiched on top of one another. Finally, adjust the opacity of the top image and move it around the canvas until you get the desired glitch effect you want.
With BeFunky’s Photo Effects, you can add glitches to your photos in just a few clicks, customize them even further, and create the most unique photos ever. We’ll show you how to customize the glitch effects in the next section, then get ready to play around with them on your own images.
How To Create A Glitch Effect
To get started, head to BeFunky’s Photo Editor and upload your image using the Open tab at the top of the page, or simply drag-and-drop an image file onto the canvas for auto-uploading. Select the Effects tab from the main menu on the left and start browsing through the photo effect options. For this tutorial, we’ll be using the Holga Art effects.
Any photo effect you click on will show you a preview on your photo in real time, as well as provide an Amount Slider to help you increase or decrease the intensity of the effect. You can either apply the effect as-is by clicking the checkmark, or click the Settings icon (looks like a mixing board) for further customization options. For this photo, we went ahead and added the Holga 1 effect.
For even more unique glitch effects, you always have the option to layer more than one photo effect in BeFunky. In this case, after we applied Holga Art 1, we also chose to add Holga Art 2 and customize some options in the Settings menu. In the Settings Menu of Holga Art 2, you’re able to adjust the amount of the effect as well as the position of the effect. Adjust the Slide Vertical and Slide Horizontal sliders until you love what you see.
You can feel free to continue layering photo effects from here, but once you feel good about your photo edit, click the Save option at the top of the platform to save your work.
If you’re not quite finished but you’re running out of time, the Save As Project option is the perfect way to save your work in editable format. That way, you can come back to your photo editing session any time and pick up right where you left off.
How cool is this photo edit? These glitch effects will have everyone wondering how you did it!
