Did you know that even in today’s digital era, flyers still remain one of the most effective forms of marketing? In fact, a recent report found this type of direct mail generates 7 times the response rate of all digital channels combined. And when it comes to winning over new customers, flyers certainly take the cake. The traditional method of advertising has the highest rate of success, influencing a whopping 34% of recipients to take some form of action. Now that’s impressive!
So, if you’re planning on organizing and promoting an upcoming event, such as a bake sale, charity auction, networking night, etc., then these statistics will sound like music to your ears. Why you ask? Because it proves that if you want the highest possible turn-out, flyers are certainly the way to go! And did we mention they’re incredibly inexpensive to create too?
We know the thought of designing an eye-catching and professional-looking flyer can make just about anyone shake in their boots, but fear not! Today we’ll also be showing you the step-by-step method to creating one with BeFunky’s Flyer Maker – no previous design experience necessary!
What Makes an Eye-Catching Flyer?
The aim of any flyer is for it to be so well-designed that people pay attention to it, keep it, or even stick it to their fridge for future reference. There are many components that make up a successful flyer, so we’ll be discussing each one of these below.
When used effectively, color can instantly grab a viewer’s attention and evoke certain emotions that enhance your message. Brands do this all the time. Take McDonald’s for example, who uses red and yellow heavily in their advertising. These colors both trigger hunger while also expressing emotions such as excitement and cheerfulness. See what we mean?
Think about the message your flyer is conveying, as well as who your target audience is. Men, for example, may be less-inclined to read a flyer that’s covered in pink, whereas an event such as a health seminar is successfully conveyed through the color green, which represents freshness, vitality, and wellness.
Additionally, you’ll want to ensure your color scheme works harmoniously together, so avoid anything that’s too over-the-top. Remember, the aim is to have recipients holding on to the flyer for future reference and they’re more likely to do this if it’s aesthetically pleasing.
Choosing the rights fonts to use on your flyer is also very important, as not only will you want them to be easily readable from a distance, but you’ll also need to create a cohesive (rather than jarring) look. Sans-serif fonts are a popular choice for flyers because they don’t contain the decorative lines (a.k.a serif) on letters, making them a lot easier to read. It’s also recommended that you use a combination of two different fonts on your flyer, including one that serves as a headline to attract instant attention.
Keep in mind that fonts should also be large enough on your page so viewers won’t have to squint to read what the text says. You’ll also want the most important text (such as what the flyer is about and any other relevant event information) to be the center of attention.
Spacing is another important element of your flyer’s overall design, as you won’t want the text all squashed-together in a corner, nor will you want images to awkwardly overlap one another.
You only have a few seconds to capture the viewer’s attention, and nothing is quicker to turn them off than an unbroken chunk of text. Spacing your elements out neatly gives the reader time to absorb the information at a glance, rather than leaving them feeling overwhelmed.
Information to include
As you can imagine, there are quite a few things you’ll want to include on your event’s flyer to increase its chances of success. These include:
- What the event is (i.e. a festival, market, seminar, etc.)
- Why you are hosting this event (for example, is it supporting a charity or cause? Or is it for a special occasion?)
- When the event will be taking place. Include the date and starting / finishing times
- Where the event will be held. Include the map address or a URL if the event is taking place online (such as an online sale)
- How the recipient will benefit from the event (i.e what can they expect to learn, see, do, buy etc.)
- If the event costs anything to attend
- Your contact details
- A link to where they can gain more information (such as a website)
- Your organization’s logo (if you have one)
How to Design a Flyer in BeFunky
If you’re overwhelmed by the amount of work it takes to design an eye-catching flyer, don’t worry - BeFunky’s graphic designers have already whipped up flyer templates that are so simple to customize! This way, you can use the flyer templates as a handy guide as you drag-and-drop images and change out the text to suit your own event. To start creating, head to the Flyer Maker and simply select your favorite design!
Once loaded, you can select individual elements on your template to edit them. The first step is to change the background to your desired image or color. You can do this by clicking on the background image already in place and selecting Replace Image in the Image Properties toolbar which appears. This will open your own files on your computer, letting you select a new background image file.
Alternatively, you can upload an image into your design by clicking Image Manager in the menu on the left-hand side. Here you have the option of using an image from your computer, BeFunky, Facebook, or even browsing the extensive library of free stock photos from Pixabay. For our design, we’ve chosen an image from Pixabay relating to floristry.
Pro Tip: Want a plain-colored background instead? Simply click Background from the menu to the left, before selecting your desired color.
Next, you’ll want to edit the template’s text to communicate your flyer’s own message. Selecting any text box within the flyer template will bring up a Text Properties toolbar, which lets you experiment with things such as Font Family, Font Size, Spacing, Paragraph, Color, and more. Double-clicking the text also allows you to edit what it says. In our design, we’ve used the font Berkshire Swash for the eye-catching headline, along with Alegreya Sans for the remaining text.
Once you’ve finished editing your text, think about what other elements you can add to your flyer, such as symbols, lines, social media icons, logos, or anything else to add that extra wow-factor. To access a wide range of these graphics, click Design Elements from the menu on the left. For example, we inserted a pink heart graphic from the Badges section to separate the two areas of text and add that extra pop of color.
Once you’re happy with your flyer’s design, all that’s left do is to save it to a destination such as your computer or Dropbox. We also recommend the Save as Project option, as this will allow you to come back and edit your design in the future should you need to (for example, to fix typos or alter the event’s details).
Tips for Success
Now that you’ve designed the perfect flyer to promote your event, you’ll want to know how you can get it in front of as many eyes as possible. As we mentioned earlier, direct mail has one of the highest rates of success when compared to other forms of advertising. To take advantage of this success for yourself, you’ll want to get your flyer printed.
Think printing a bunch of flyers will leave your bank account looking empty? Not to worry, as there are actually a few different methods to printing flyers, with some of these costing less than the price of lunch!
Firstly, you can send your flyer design to an online printing service such as VistaPrint. They offer competitive prices for bulk orders (if you plan on handing out hundreds of copies of your flyer) and speedy delivery.
Secondly, you might prefer to visit a printing company in-person to have your flyer printed. If you work within an industry that sees you needing to print plenty of documents, establishing a relationship with your local printing service might prove beneficial in the long-run!
Lastly, those who are on a super-strict budget might like to print their flyer themselves using their own printer. This is particularly useful if you have a high-quality printer that can keep those colors looking bright and beautiful!
Get Them In The Right Hands
Once you’ve got a stack of flyers printed, it’s time to get them in as many hands as possible! There are many ways that you can do this, but the trick is to think about who your target audience is, as well as where they hang out. For example, if you’re advertising a craft workshop, you might ask your local craft store if they can display a stack of your event flyers in their shop. Alternatively, you might even hand-out flyers to those browsing the craft books section at the library. See what we mean?
In order to generate the most awareness about your event (particularly if it’s something that appeals to the masses), you can’t go wrong with dropping your flyers into letterboxes, as well as handing them out in high-traffic places such as cafes, your local shopping center, or even to passers-by in the street. You’ll also benefit from pinning your flyer to noticeboards around your city, or even to those in the local universities, colleges, or schools.
Create A Digital Version
Another great tip is to utilize the digital version of your flyer, as you should never underestimate the power of the online world! Be sure to share the image across all of your social media platforms and provide a simple call to action encouraging your followers to re-tweet, share, or regram it.
If you or your business has built-up quite the email list, then you can also insert the flyer into an email campaign to further spread the word. Again, encourage readers to forward the email to any of their friends or family who they think might also be interested in your event. Free word-of-mouth advertising? Sounds good to us!
Offer A Little Something Extra
Lastly, if you want to boost your flyer’s engagement rate even more, we recommend adding incentives to it, such as a voucher or coupon code. Not only do people love a discount or a freebie, but they also provide you with a simple way to measure your flyer’s success. As soon as someone uses that specific code or voucher, you’ll know that they’ve engaged with your flyer. Too easy!
