If you think you haven’t stumbled upon a Facebook ad before, guess again. These highly-targeted advertisements appear in the site’s right-hand column and news feed, announcing a variety of products and services to suit each user’s interests.
Facebook ads mean big business, with companies all over the world wanting to cash-in on that success. And with almost 80% of American internet users being active on Facebook (and over 70% of these users scrolling through the platform daily), it isn’t hard to see why.
In 2018, Facebook ads are predicted to be more profitable than ever, so if you’re running a products or services-based business, you’ll certainly want to get in on them. Here’s the thing though: over 5 million businesses are already using the platform for advertising, so how do you guarantee your advertisement’s success? In other words, how can you make it stand out from the rest of the pack?
If you’re beginning to fret, fear not. BeFunky’s Banner Maker makes designing Facebook ads easy and we’re going to show you exactly how!
Tips For Creating Captivating Facebook Ads
Before we show you our simple step-by-step guide to creating Facebook ads in BeFunky’s Designer, you need to know what transforms your advertisement from blah to hurrah. We’ve included our secrets for success below!
Use A Compelling Graphic
Like most social media platforms, Facebook is highly visual. It’s important to use an eye-catching image in your advertisement to truly capture a user’s attention as they scroll through their news feed. You’ll also want your image to look professional, however the good news is that you don’t have to hire a photographer to achieve this. Simply use our Photo Editor to ensure elements such as brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness are on-point.
You’ll also want your image to successfully convey what your product or service is all about. If someone can’t gauge this within less than three seconds of staring at your image, then it’s a good option to swap it out for something more obvious.
The Less Text, The Better
If you want users to engage with your advertisement, steer clear of using large chunks of text. Remember, you want them to take just a few seconds (or less!) to comprehend what your ad is all about, and the best way to do this is by only including a very small amount of copy. Facebook has gone one step further to make this easier for you, implementing a 20% text rule and flagging any ads which don’t adhere to this requirement. Therefore, you’ll want to think about overlaying your ad image with just a headline, logo, and/or sub-heading to minimize text and keep your message on-point.
Up The Ante With A Call-To-Action
While an ad featuring a captivating image and minimal text is ideal, it still won’t perform successfully without a call-to-action (CTA). This is because you need to not only tell viewers why they need your product or service, but also how they can take action immediately to prevent missing out on your offer. An advertisement that hooks the reader but doesn’t offer any further action will only leave them feeling confused.
Remember, the goal here isn’t to just gain their attention, but to convert those leads into sales. Cha-ching!
Add A Human Element
If your Facebook ad is promoting a product, it makes sense to feature a simple product photo in your ad’s design, right? Unfortunately, this isn’t quite the case, as it’s believed that ads which contain imagery of people interacting with the product actually perform better. This is because our Facebook feeds are filled with photos of friends and family, making us feeling not just more familiar with this type of image, but also more positive towards it. A photo of a product on its own might look out of place, making the viewer scroll right past it as they’ve already registered it in their mind as an advertisement. Include a photo of people (or a single person) using your product or service instead, and users are more likely to engage with that image as it showcases this human element.
With these top tips in mind, you’re now ready to design your very own Facebook ad. Cue the fun part!
How To Create A Facebook Ad With BeFunky’s Banner Maker
To begin designing your Facebook ad, head to the Banner Maker in BeFunky’s Designer. You’ll be presented with tons of Facebook ad templates and layouts. Simply click on a template that takes your fancy to begin customizing it!
Firstly, you’ll want to change your template’s existing image to reflect what you’re advertising. You can do this by clicking on the image currently in place and an Image Properties toolbar will appear. The option to Replace Image lets you open an image from your own files to insert into the design.
Want to use a free (yet ultra-professional) stock photo instead? Click on the Image Manager tab in the menu on the left, followed by the ‘...’ button. You’ll be able to search Pixabay’s extensive library of over a million free-to-use stock photos, right from within BeFunky’s Designer. Just type your search term in and watch the results appear, then click on your favorites to use in your Facebook ad design.
Next, you’ll need to edit the template’s existing text, so it reflects your own Facebook ad’s headline or message. You can do this by clicking on the text boxes you want to change and typing. When you click on any text box, you’ll find that a Text Properties toolbar appears, where you can change elements such as Font Family, Font Size, Spacing, Paragraph, Color, and more.
Pro Tip: You can also move elements on your template around to better represent the Facebook Ad you had in mind. You can do this by clicking and dragging them with your mouse. Alternatively, you can delete unwanted elements by selecting them with your mouse and hitting Delete on your keyboard.
The Designer also has a wide range of design elements (including graphics, lines, shapes, symbols, frames, and so much more) that you can insert to make your Facebook Ad look even more stylish. You’ll find all of these via the Design Elements tab in the menu on the left (it’s the triangle symbol).
Whenever you add a design element, you can further customize it by selecting options from the Graphic Properties toolbar. This appears whenever you select a graphic and it allows you to alter elements such as Color Overlay, Opacity, Blend Mode, and more. Clicking on Color Overlay will bring up the Color Picker option, which lets you select a new color for your graphic. You can also change the Intensity of the color using the slider at the bottom.
Pro Tip: Love a design element so much that you want to put more than one of it in your design? Rather than selecting it from the Design Elements tab again, just click on the element you want to duplicate, before hitting ‘D’ on your keyboard (or Duplicate in the Graphic Properties toolbar). Too easy!
Once you’re completely happy with your ad’s design, it’s time to save it to a destination such as your computer or Dropbox, so it’s ready to upload to Facebook. You can save your Facebook ad by clicking on the Save button at the top of the page, then choosing a destination. We also recommend the Save as Project option, as this will allow you to come back and edit your advertisement in the future should you need to (for example, to correct any typos or re-use as a template for future Facebook ads).
Ta-da, you did it!
Tips For Successful Facebook Ads
Now that your Facebook ad is designed and ready to go, you’ll need to know what to do next in the posting process to ensure ultimate success. Luckily, we’ve rounded-up our top tips below!
Determine An Objective
When going down the Facebook ad route, there’s many potential objectives you’ll have in mind, including:
- Brand awareness
- App installs
- Catalog sales
- Store visits
These are the objectives you choose from when setting up your ad too, so you’ll need to make sure you’ve already thought long and hard about exactly what it is you want to achieve from advertising on Facebook before you take the plunge! All you need to do is ask yourself: "what's the most important outcome I want from this ad?"
Choose Your Target Audience
Facebook Ads are an extremely popular form of marketing due to the fact that businesses are able to target their ad to their ideal client. When setting up your ad, you’ll be asked to select audience criteria such as location, age, gender, interests, behaviours and demographics. It might be a lot to take in all at once, but knowing exactly who your target audience is will allow your ad to reach them successfully. It also prevents you from wasting your precious budget on those who simply aren’t interested in your products or services.
If you don’t have all of this detailed information already, then simply looking at the insights of your business’ Facebook page will fill-in the blanks for you. It’ll tell you what groups the majority of your fans belong to, helping you quickly work out who your products or services appeal to the most.
Set A Budget
Another benefit of Facebook ads is that you are in control of how much you spend, meaning you can ensure you never go over your allocated advertising costs. You simply set a total amount that you want to spend daily or over the course of the campaign, plus you can edit this figure at any time. Before uploading your ad, it’s important to sit down and work this figure out to ensure you don’t have any regrets down the line. We also recommend starting small, before working up to a larger budget (or longer campaign). Once you’re happy with your advertisement’s results, you can then begin increasing your advertising efforts.
Who knew creating your very own Facebook ads could be so easy? Thanks to BeFunky’s Banner Maker, you’ll soon be putting your products or services in front of your ideal consumers. Now all you need to do is sit back, relax, and watch those click-throughs soar. Hooray!
