How to Create Birthday Cards for Kids Using the Card Maker
To start, head directly to the Birthday Card Maker and choose a template. For this example, we’ll be creating a digital birthday card for a 4-year-old girl. Want to craft custom kid’s birthday cards for free? We even have a range of free birthday card templates available, so be sure to check those out too!

Step 1: Add a Personal Photo
The first thing you’ll need to do is to change the template’s existing photo (or photos) for one that features your birthday girl or boy. To do so, navigate to the Image Manager tab and upload your own photo. Then, simply drag and drop it onto the existing placeholder image.

Step 2: Customize the Text
You’ll also want to edit your card template’s existing text to include a personal birthday message. Double-click any text box you wish to change and add a special birthday message. From the Text Properties menu which appears when you click on a text box, you can also adjust the font, text size, text color, spacing, and more.

Step 3: Customize the Design
Want to change the background color of your kid’s birthday card design? Navigate to Customize in the main menu, then select a new shade from the color swatches. Clicking the first swatch will open the Color Picker, from which you can choose any color you want.

You can also add fun graphics to your birthday card by clicking on Graphics in the main menu on the left. There are basic shapes to choose from, or click Search Graphics to access our huge library of clip art, symbols, illustrations, and more. Once selected, drag and drop the new graphics onto your card design and reposition or resize as needed.

Want to change the colors of these graphics? Just click the graphic or shape you wish to change, and a Graphic Properties panel will appear. From here, you can adjust the color overlay, tint, drop shadow, and more.

Step 4: Save Your Kid’s Birthday Card
Once you’ve finished designing your custom kid’s birthday card, all that’s left to do is to save it. Click Save at the top of the screen, then choose your save location and format.
If choosing to print your card, we recommend saving it as a PDF in Print Quality.

Inspiration: More Ways to Customize Birthday Cards
Feeling even more creative? While our pre-designed children’s birthday card templates are easy enough for kids to customize themselves, there are plenty of ways you can take them a step further using other BeFunky tools and features. Here are a few of our favorite ideas:
Add an Artsy Photo Effect
For a card with a dreamy and fairy-inspired vibe, try Watercolor GFX or Pastel Art DLX. These effects soften the photo with painterly textures and light washes of color, adding a magical, storybook feel.
Creating a card for a superhero-loving kid? Add some action-packed flair by applying the Pop Comic or Graphic Novel DLX effect to their photo. These styles give the image bold outlines and dynamic coloring, making it look like it jumped straight out of a comic book. Pair it with bright primary colors, dot graphics, and comic book inspired fonts for maximum impact.

Create a Cutout Collage
Want a birthday card that looks like it came straight out of a craft session – scissors, glue, and all – but without the mess? Try using the Background Remover tool to cut out a photo of the birthday boy or girl. Once you've got their silhouette or portrait isolated, add layers of textures, patterns, and graphic elements to create a playful, scrapbook-inspired design. You can even overlap paper textures with illustrated doodles and colorful shapes to give the card a hand-assembled feel. It’s a great way to bring a tactile and homemade vibe to your design, even though it was all done digitally.

Let Your Toddler Be the Designer
Looking to create a homemade birthday card from a toddler? With our easy-to-use tools, even the littlest creators can help bring the card to life. Let them pick out their favorite photo of the recipient or scroll through the Graphic Library together to choose fun illustrations. Once you've got the basics in place, open up the Paint Brush tool (from our Photo Editor’s Touch Up tab) and hand over creative control.
Your toddler can scribble a colorful “signature”, draw balloons, hearts, or stars, or even doodle directly on the featured photo for a personalized twist. These playful markings make the card feel truly one-of-a-kind and the imperfections are part of the charm. It’s a great way to involve them in the card-making process and create something that feels totally unique.
