A Step-By-Step Guide To The Step-By-Step Graphic: The Checklist

As a blogger, there comes a time where you experience that oh no moment, the one where you realize the post you’re putting together needs to be accompanied by a long, convoluted list of materials. I’m not talking about instructions for a cute, five step recipe here. I’m talking about an encyclopedia-esque, thirty-plus items list. The kind of list that makes you question if its inclusion on your blog baby will absolutely tank the aesthetic.

And even worse is the moment after you’ve typed out that eyesore list, painstakingly formatted it into multiple, uneven columns, and you give it a good, hard look and know my readers won’t even be able to remember all of this off the top of their heads!

Does that render your gargantuan list totally useless? Most likely.

But don’t worry guys! I’ve found a solution that not only handles this pesky problem, but does it in a way that can even step up your blog game.

Step 1: Pick Out Your Template

Not only does BeFunky make it easy for you to create your own graphics, but it sets you up with blank blogger resource templates to guide the process! It rocked my blogging world when I first learned about these online design tools.


But I digress. I’m putting together a checklist of hiking supplies for my nature lovers out there. I choose the first blank template on the list, which is 315px x 560px. It has the same basic shape as a sheet of computer paper, which I like because I want people to download this and use it while they’re picking out and packing up their outdoorsy gear.

Step 2: Sprinkle in the Extras

Take a good look through the designer elements; there’s a ton of resources here. After clicking through all the different categories, I know there’s only one thing I want to add: my own checklist box. Don’t get me wrong, BeFunky has tons of shapes to choose from for this kind of thing. I’m just a pretty particular kind of person.

This is where BeFunky’s image manager becomes an awesome asset. I use an online search engine to find checklist box .pngs, pick my favorite, download it, and then upload it to the manager. This all just takes a couple of minutes.


Step 3: Lay Everything Out (aka The Hard Part)

Before I get into the nitty gritty, I take a moment to imagine what I want to create. My checklist should give off nature vibes, be colorful, and feel simple even though it includes a lot of information. I go to the background color section and pick out the olive green choice, then lighten it with the color picker to a very pale, almost minty green. I like this shade because it won’t overpower any other colors I use on the template, but it’s more fun than a plain white background.


Now, it’s time to lay out the title and list. This can be time consuming and painstaking or totally easy; it just depends on your design style.

I add a text graphic to my template, type out my title, then size it and position it to where I think I’ll want it later on. Then, I add a ribbon graphic that I'm going to use as a border.


Next, I look through my list and decide it’ll be easier to read if I split them my information into four categories: clothing, food, equipment, and hiking accessories.

First, I tackle the clothing section. I create a new text graphic for the title, pick out the font, color, and size. I think it’ll be more clear it’s a header (and generally cuter) if there’s a line separating it from the actual list. I choose a line from the design elements.


Next, I open the image manager and pull my checklist box onto the template. I resize and duplicate the checklist box so there’s one for each of my clothing items, then I position everything on the template. Next, I create the text for one of my items, duplicate that, and fill out the checklist.

I repeat for food, equipment, and hiking accessories.


Step 4: Load Up with Graphics

Phew, now the tedious part is over. It’s time to let loose with a little creativity! I search through the design elements and add anything I think will enhance the style of my image. I also play around with the graphic properties of absolutely everything to customize it; make sure you do too!

For a little extra oomph, I even add a bottom border of trees that I found under the illustrations section.


And just like that, I’ve transformed a boring, overwhelming list into something that adds pizzaz to my post:


Step 5: Download, Export, and Upload

My creation is officially ready to enter the blog world! I download it from BeFunky’s website as a .png at the highest quality. Then, I open it on my computer (it automatically opens in Preview on mine, but you can use any document viewer). I export the file as a PDF so that it’ll be easy for my followers to download. Then, I simply upload it to my blog as a downloadable link.
