Getting engaged is an exciting moment in anyone’s life and it also marks the beginning of something quite special. The wedding plans begin, as do those pre-big-day jitters of course!
Once you’ve organized important details such as the ceremony, reception venue, and date, it’s time to get your loved ones in on the loop. The best way to do this is through a Save the Date - but just why is this pre-invitation such a necessity? Not only does it serve as a reminder for your guests to mark it in their calendars (and indeed, save the date), but it’s also the very first impression of your wedding that these people will receive. This is where you let your unique style as a couple shine through, plus it gives you a great chance to communicate your wedding’s theme and color scheme!
We know what you’re thinking though: what exactly am I meant to include on a Save the Date, and how can I create one on-the-cheap (because weddings are expensive enough already)?

Making A Great First Impression
There are a number of things that you must take into consideration when designing your Save the Date, but once you’re aware of them, doing so will be a walk in the park!
Theme and Color Scheme
Before creating your Save the Date, you’ll want to have your wedding’s theme and color scheme already sorted out. This way, you can design your pre-invitation with these in mind, along with the additional wedding stationery to follow (such as the official invites, menu, thank you cards etc.). Cohesivity is the key here, and your Save the Date is first in line to successfully communicate these ideas.
Deciding upon a specific color scheme or design theme can be as simple as looking to your personal preferences. Love all things artsy? Why not incorporate watercolors into your Save the Date? Do you and your partner share a favorite color? Try to infuse it into your design as much as possible. You get the idea!
Make it Personable
Want to know the most unique thing about your wedding? The two of you, of course! Remember this when you’re designing your Save the Dates, as the entire event is really a celebration of you both, along with your love for each other.
This is why it’s a great idea to include a photo of both you and your fiancé on the page, so think back to any gorgeous shots you took together. If you’ve already gone ahead and done an engagement shoot, then you’re in luck! Simply choose your favorite snap to include in your design. Your recipients will be saying “aww” in no time!
You’ll want to inject as much of your personalities and quirks into the Save the Date as possible, especially since this is a document many of your loved ones (as well as yourselves) will hold on to for years to come. Plus, it’ll certainly end up being stuck on a few fridges!
It’s a Date
It probably goes without saying, but one of the most important elements of any Save the Date is – you guessed it – the actual date! Understandably, you won’t know this key detail until you’ve booked your venue, along with the other important elements that go along with it (such as caterers, the celebrant, etc.)
Your wedding date should also be very prominent on the Save the Date so guests will easily spot it at a glance. This will encourage them to mark it on their calendars!
The More Information, the Better
Along with the date, you’ll also want to include as many other details as possible, such as both yours and your fiancé’s names, the location of the wedding, start time, and even an email should guests need to get in contact with you (although RSVPs are not necessary at this early stage – you can save those for the official invitation!).
Another piece of information brides and grooms are including on their wedding stationary in this digital age is a link to their wedding website. Bonus points if you’re able to do this too!
When Should You Send Your Save the Dates?
This is often the question on every bride and groom’s lips, but thankfully, the answer is quite straight-forward. The general rule is to send out your Save the Dates anywhere between six to eight months before the big day, but if you’re planning a destination wedding that involves lengthy travel and accommodation, then you should give your guests the heads-up even earlier. This ensures they can save up, book what’s needed, and get their leave approved at work. Phew!
How To Design Save The Dates In BeFunky
Now that you have a plan for your Save The Dates, head to the Designer and navigate to Templates, followed by Event Graphics, then Save the Date. From here, you can select your desired template, ready to tweak it to your heart’s content!
The next step is to replace your template’s image or background with one that’s more personable to you and your fiancé. To do this, click on the provided image and an Image Properties toolbar appears. Select Replace Image to open a photo from your own files.
Alternatively, you can also locate Image Manager in the menu on the left. From here, you can upload an image from multiple destinations, such as your computer, Befunky, Facebook, or even Pixabay’s extensive library of free-to-use stock photos.
Once your chosen image is in place, you’ll want to edit the pre-existing text to reflect your own style and details. You can do this by clicking on the text boxes you want to change and typing. When you click on any text box, you’ll find that a Text Properties toolbar appears, where you can change elements such as Font Family, Font Size, Spacing, Paragraph, Color, and more.
We’ve paired the fonts Great Vibes and Open Sans together in our design. The key is to avoid too many font clashes, so two is the perfect number to use.
Now you’re ready to add some extra wow-factor to your Save The Date by placing some thoughtful graphics on it! You’ll find all the graphics and overlays you need in the Design Elements tab, found in the menu on the left (the triangle symbol). There are plenty of symbols, shapes, and graphics to choose from here, including a Wedding category!
We’ve chosen to insert a decorative line underneath the date, as this breaks-up the design and draws the viewer’s eyes to those all-important numbers even more!
Once you’re completely happy with your Save the Date, the final step is to save it to a destination such as your computer or Dropbox. We also recommend the Save as Project option, as this will allow you to come back and edit your design in the future should you need to (for example, to print more copies, or even to use as a template for your additional wedding stationery down the line!).
