How to Use Warmer Tones in Your Photo Editing

By Melanie Doncas | Photo Editor Tutorials

You might associate temperature with the weather, but did you know it also plays an important role in your photography? When it comes to photos, temperature refers to how cool or warm an image’s colors are. Not only can temperature dramatically alter an image’s appearance, but each category also evokes different emotions. Cool colors (such as blue, purple, and green) can make us feel calm, sad, or creative, while warm colors (such as red, orange, and yellow) promote feelings of happiness, comfort, or hostility.

Today, we’ll be focusing on the latter category, with BeFunky’s entire category of Photo Effects dedicated to Warmer Tones. They’re essentially filters that will warm up the colors in your photos in all the right places and can be applied to your photos in as little as a few clicks!

Warmer Tones Inspiration

If you’re wondering if your favorite images will look good with warm tones, rest assured. Our Warmer Tones effects look fantastic on all types of photos – whether it’s portrait, landscape, food, or lifestyle photography! Let’s look at some examples of each below.

Portrait Photography

Give your portraits an instant pop of vivid, warm tones - just as we’ve done here using the Warmer Tones 3 effect. Previously, the cooler tones of the model’s face and white shirt had her blending into the blue background, but enhancing the photo with Warmer Tones ensures all eyes are on her!

Landscape Photography

If your landscape photography is looking less-than-welcoming, those cool tones might be to blame. Remember, cool tones such as blue can have negative connotations including sadness, isolation, or cold weather. Add some good vibes by adding Warmer Tones, just as we’ve done to this photograph using the Warmer Tones 6 effect. Now, this landscape looks intriguing and dramatic – not dreary!

Food Photography

You’ve probably heard the saying, “you eat with your eyes”, and this is why nailing your food photography is extremely important. You want what you’re photographing to look inviting, aesthetically pleasing, and above all, delicious! Make your food photography’s tones richer and eye-catching by turning up the volume on those warm shades. Here, we’ve used Warmer Tones 5 to increase saturation and provide a beautiful balance within the image.

How to Add Warmer Tones to Photos

Now that you’re feeling inspired, it’s time to try our Warmer Tones effects on your own photos! To get started, head to the Photo Editor and Open an image of your choice.

Add warmer tones to your photography in BeFunky

Navigate to Effects (the star symbol) in the main menu on the left. Here, you’ll find the Warmer Tones category, which you can click to view the wide array of Warmer Tones effects you have to choose from.

Warmer tones options

Select your preferred Warmer Tones effect by clicking on it. When you do this, you’ll notice multiple options: a slider to increase or decrease the effect, and buttons including Settings, Cancel, or Apply. If you’d like to apply the effect as-is, click Apply. To choose a different effect instead, simply click Cancel. If you wish to adjust the effect further, click Settings.

Adjust your warmer tone photography

Within the Settings option, in the Adjust panel, you’ll find three sliders: Amount, Highlights, and Shadows. Amount refers to the overall strength of the chosen effect, while Highlights refer to the bright areas of your image, and Shadows refer to the dark areas of your image. Simply adjust the slider from left to right to increase the effect and vice-versa.

Adjust the tones in your warm tone photography

There is also an Erase panel, located next to Adjust, which allows you to apply the effect to only a selected part of your photo, if you wish. The sliders let you adjust Brush Size, Brush Hardness, and Brush Strength.

Customize your warm tone photography

Once you’re done adjusting the settings of your Warmer Tones effect, simply click the blue checkmark button to apply it.

Finalize your warm tone photography

Love how your image looks? The best part is that these Warmer Tones effects are also available in our Batch Photo Editor, if you wish to apply the same customizable filter to multiple images at once!
