How to Replace Skies in Real Estate Photos and Boost Buyer Appeal

By Samantha Cubbison | Photo Editor Tutorials

In real estate photography, first impressions make all the difference – but a dull, overcast sky can instantly take the life out of an otherwise beautiful listing. Whether you’re a real estate agent capturing quick shots or a professional photographer prepping a new property, getting the perfect weather at the right time isn’t always possible. That’s where the Sky Replacer comes in. With just a few clicks, you can swap in a bright blue sky that enhances curb appeal, makes exteriors more inviting, and helps homes sell faster. Here’s how to do it.

Why Use the Sky Replacer for Real Estate Photos

Real estate photos are meant to highlight the best version of a property – and that includes the sky. Unpredictable weather shouldn’t delay your shoot or hold back your listing. Overcast skies make exteriors look dreary and less welcoming. Instant blue skies give your photos a polished, high-quality feel that grabs attention.

How to Replace the Sky of Real Estate Photos

Enhancing your listing photos with a better sky takes just a few simple steps. The Sky Replacer handles the hard work for you – no complicated selections or photo compositing required. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Open the Sky Replacer

Head to the Sky Replacer and upload the real estate photo you’d like to enhance. Once your photo loads, the tool will automatically detect and isolate the sky. Then, click Change Sky.

Step 2: Choose a New Sky

From the Image dropdown, click Select Sky. Select a preset sky from BeFunky’s built-in sky library or upload your own. A clear blue sky or light clouds often works best for real estate.

Step 3: Edit the Sky and Foreground

Next, for an even more seamless result, click on the Settings icon to fine-tune brightness, contrast, and warmth to match the lighting of the property.

Try increasing the Affect Foreground to better blend your new sky with the property. To perfectly blend a stark or bold sky, use the Adjust tab to blur or shift the sky, match its tone to the foreground, or soften the edges.

Return to the main menu to make any final adjustments. Head to Edit Sky to make more refinements to the background. But for our example, we’re going to use the Edit Foreground menu to refine the property’s appearance.

Step 4: Save Your Photo

When everything looks just right, head back to the main menu and click Apply, followed by Save at the top of the canvas. You can save directly to your computer, Google Drive, or another destination of your choice – and upload it straight to your listing platform.

Bring the Scene Together With the Perfect Sky

In the original photo, the sky felt a bit drab and wasn't doing our listing photo any favors. But with a simple sky replacement, the mood now matches the property's charm.

More Real Estate Sky Edits to Try

Swapping out the sky in your listing photos doesn’t just fix bad weather – it lets you set the tone for how a property feels. With the Sky Replacer, you can try out different skies until the image matches the mood you’re after. Here are a few ideas to inspire your edits:

Swap in a Romantic Sunset Sky

A soft, pink sunset can completely change the mood of your real estate photo. Swapping a dull or overcast sky for romantic pastel tones adds a special kind of charm – especially for outdoor spaces like patios, gardens, or balconies. It’s an easy way to create emotional appeal and help buyers picture themselves at home.

Add a Golden-Hour Glow

If you want to add a sense of whimsy or luxury, try using a warm sunset sky. The warm tones of golden hour can add a cozy, lived-in feeling to a home – perfect for highlighting outdoor spaces or showing off architectural details with a subtle glow.

Embrace the Mood With a Weathered Sky

Not every home needs clear blue skies to stand out. If it looks like it just rained, consider enhancing the moment rather than covering it up. A moody sky, light drizzle, or even a post-storm rainbow can create a sense of atmosphere and authenticity – especially for homes that feel cozy, modern, or rooted in nature. Matching the sky to the weather on the ground adds cohesion and charm, making your image feel intentional instead of mismatched.
